US religious culture seems to owe a lot to the original 17th century Puritan founders of the country. Let us remind ourselves that the Puritans were not modern Quakers, they advocated an extended religious war against the whole of Catholic Europe and despised King James I for making peace with Spain; and that during their brief dictatorship of England after the Civil War they commited genocide in Ireland, vandalised medieval cathedrals and made the performance of Shakespeare plays illegal. If this sounds awfully like the Taliban I don't think that is any accident. Yet, the Pilgrim Fathers are still popularly characterised as innocent persecuted victims of European monarchical despotism. Though largely purged of its old anti-catholicism, present day American fundamentalist Christianity seems to perpetuate this myth of victimhood and the old tradition of righteous violence.
